Axis Unveil Velocity Tower Images
Months after starting construction and almost ten floors into building it, Axis Architecture have finally unveiled the look of the Velocity Tower in Sheffield.
Showing a 22 floor glass tower the scheme is remarkably similar in some ways to the previous Broadway Malyan design. The essential shape of the project remains with its curving high-rise element but there are substantial changes to the cladding as previously noted in the planning application which see the heavy use of reflective glass as the dominant material with a matching palette of other materials .
More notable are the changes to the attached lower-rise wing which have much more substantial detailing in the form of a patchwork of balconies, corner sun boxes for those apartments that don't have balconies, and a notable wind turbine on the top of the building tipping a nod to environmental consciousness.
Whilst the images do show something that is very glass heavy this is a formula that has worked well for Axis in the past leading to a successful finish of a previous scheme for developer Velocity, V1.
Construction has been speeding ahead now for some months despite the revised plans still not having planning permission with the developer so quick off the ball when they picked up the site and design from the previous owner, CALA, that when the planning application went in there were no CGIs.
Completion of the 66 metre tall 205 apartment scheme is set for late 2008 or early 2009 which obviously can't happen soon enough for Velocity given the accelerated way the project is getting off the ground.
