Sheffield Showroom Winner Revealed
A competition held by the Royal Institute of British Architects to find the design for a new building at the Showroom Cinema and Workstation Creative Centre in Sheffield has had the winner plans revealed.
The competition organised by RIBA was in an open design format that attracted some sixty different architects from around the world with Prue Chiles Architects, HLM Architects, Houghton Budd Architects, Jason King Associates and Sadar Vuga Arhitekti + The Designers Republic all being short-listed by the jury before being eliminated in an anonymous public exhibition.
The winning design for the site has been penned by a couple of David Chipperfield defectors, who in 2006 left and founded their own firm calledCarmody Groarke.
It features a stacked art-deco look that bares a resemblance to groupings of book-ends that are arranged perpendicularly with both solid and transuculent facades. As well improved facilities for the cinema and creative centre, noticeable improvements for visitors include changes to the entrances and an impressive public roof terrace that will offer some of the best views in Sheffield.
The site which is located next to Sheaf Square will be one of the first things to greet travellers coming out of Sheffield's railway station and is part of a constant stream of improvements, both big and small in the immediate area that have included the construction of St Paul�s Place and Winter Gardens and renovation plus a new public square to the station itself.
